Your union holds its next membership meeting this Tuesday, March 19, at 11 a.m. in Social Science 141. (Note updated room number.) The agenda includes:
• California Federation of Teachers (CFT) convention report from delegates
• Plans for Executive Board elections, to be held this Spring
• Report on online student evaluation of faculty
• (time permitting) Discussion of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) in contract Assignment article
Attendance is open to all members and interested faculty.
California Federation of Teachers Community College Council President Carl Friedlander, writing in the current issue of AFT Perspective, raises concerns about how the ACCJC wields its authority:
"...The ACCJC leadership, more than the leadership of any other regional commission, has inappropriately embraced a particular 'education reform' agenda. This Commission’s zealotry is roiling the system and poisoning faculty attitudes about accreditation itself."

San Francisco Chronicle reporter Nanette Asimov adds more perspective here:
"But faculty union leaders and many students up and down the state say the...accrediting commission...is overly harsh and out of touch with what colleges need to improve. The commission sanctioned California colleges nearly five times as often as commissions around the country sanctioned colleges in their regions last year, and up to 16 times as often between 2003 and 2008, writes Marty Hittelman, former president of the California Federation of Teachers."
And Los Angeles Daily News reporter Dana Bartholomew reports:
"A growing number of faculty critics say the accrediting agency doesn't value colleges for their student instruction, but for conducting costly reports, data gathering and reviews of school policies and procedures.
They say the highly secretive agency has promoted its own agenda, while focusing on so-called measurable student learning outcomes in which to gauge student success."
CCFF is pleased to announce the results of the election held last week. Union members voted to choose delegates to the statewide California Federation of Teachers convention.

In all, 56 ballots were cast.
Since there was a tie for the third spot, the Executive Board decided to send the top four delegates to the convention, rather than three delegates as originally planned. (Given the size of the local, the CFT allows us to send 11 voting delegates. The Board is sending a smaller delegation to save travel funds.)
CCFF thanks everyone who voted in the election, and especially thank the above members for volunteering their time to go to Sacramento.

Re: Demand to Bargain over Changes in Summer Calendar, 2012
Dear Victor:
Please accept this as the Cerritos College Faculty Federation, CFT Local 6215’s Demand to Bargain over the 2012 Summer scheduling. The District’s change, without bargaining, directly impacts mandatory subjects of bargaining, including calendar, workload, distribution of work and other related issues. PERB has long held that these subjects require bargaining over the decision itself and its effect (the second of which impacts summer earning, vacations, decisions to take other employment, etc.). The scope of bargaining that the parties previously engaged in did not encompass virtually any of the changes that have now been announced by the District.
At your earliest convenience, please provide me dates so that the parties can begin in earnest to remedy this situation. Furthermore, please provide the CCFF with all data the District relied upon in determining that its announced Summer scheduling and related workload was its preferred outcome. Since the CCFF does not know if you relied on anything, please identify whatever considerations and supporting documentation was used in coming to this conclusion. We will need this information within two weeks, or one week before we begin bargaining, whichever is sooner.
In the future, we continue to hope that the District can merely notify us and provide us an opportunity to bargain before it takes these matters public. Our relationship would be vastly improved under those conditions.
